About The Australian Working Holiday Visa

General Information

With an Australian Working Holiday Visa (subclass 417) you can live, work, and travel in Australia for 12 months.

With this visa, you have an entire year to experience everything Australia has to offer while working to fund your adventures here and gain some international work experience.

The 417 visa is ideal for people aged 18-30 (18-35 for Irish, French, Danish and Canadian Passport holders) who want to go on a working holiday to Australia.

Eligibility

You can apply for the 417 visa if:

  • You’re aged between 18 and 30. The age limit for Canadian, Irish, Danish and French passport holders is 18-35 (not yet 36)
  • You have a valid passport from an eligible country
  • Your passport is valid for the duration of your stay in Australia
  • You will not have a dependent child with you while you are in Australia
  • This is your first Australian working holiday visa
  • You have enough money to support yourself in Australia (AUD 5,000)
  • You are of good health and character

The Australian Working Holiday Visa (subclass 417) is a temporary visa (valid for up to 12 months) for young people aged 18 – 30 (18-35 for Irish, French and Canadian Passport holders) who want to work and travel in Australia. With a Working Holiday Visa, you can choose to work full-time, part-time, or volunteer in Australia. The work is restricted to a period of 6 months with a single employer.

Yes! You can extend your time in Australia by applying for a second Working Holiday Visa (subclass 417). In order to apply you must:

  • be aged between 18-30 (or 18-35 for Canadian, Irish and French passport holders)
  • have completed at least three months (88 calendar days) specified work in regional Australia while on your first Working Holiday Visa

You can also add a third year by applying for a 12-month extension to your 417 visas. To do so, you must complete an extra six months (179 calendar days) of specified work in regional areas of Australia.

During each 12-month visa period, visa holders are restricted to work 6 months for a single employer.

You must be outside Australia when you apply for your First Working Holiday Visa, but you can apply for your Second or Third Working Holiday visa from Australia (if you are already there on your First/Second visa).

You can apply for the Working Holiday visa (Subclass 417) if you hold a passport from:
Belgium, Canada, Cyprus, Denmark, Estonia, Finland, France, Germany, Hong Kong, Republic of Ireland, Italy, Japan, Republic of Korea, Malta, Netherlands, Norway, Sweden, Taiwan and the UK.

Yes, if you are a British, Canadian, Dutch, French or Irish citizen up to 35 years old.
