FAQ

There is no specific limit on the number of times you can enter the US on a B1/B2 visa, however, each entry is subject to US Customs and Border Protection (CBP) approval at the port of entry, where an officer determines how long you can stay and whether your entry is appropriate.

You can typically stay for a maximum of six months per entry on a B1/B1 visa.

The limitations for a B1/B2 visa are as follows:

  • You can only stay for the duration granted by the Customs and Border Protection (CBP) officer
  • Your purpose of visit has to be for either business or tourist activities
  • You cannot work or receive payment from US sources
  • You cannot enrol in a full-time academic program

No, you cannot take up employment while you’re in the US on a B1/B2 visa. In limited circumstances, foreign nationals with a B1/B2 can perform some specialised duties (i.e. engineers participating in the installation and commissioning of equipment) for a short period of time but they can’t be employed by or receive payment from any US entity.

If you overstay your B1/B2 visa, you can get barred from re-entering the US for a number of years, depending on how long you overstay your visa.

You may be able to get a B1/B2 visa extension one or more times under certain circumstances, however, note that each request is carefully reviewed.

With a B1/B2 visa, you can enter the US for either business (B1) or tourism (B2), or both, as these visas are often granted together.
